Where a migration corridor, a shipping lane and fifteen million people occupy the same strait.

Every autumn, hundreds of thousands of raptors funnel over the Bosphorus — storks, honey buzzards, eagles — because they will not cross open sea and this is the narrowest crossing. They pass directly over the mosques. It is the single best example anywhere of a wild event happening above a city that mostly ignores it.

At water level the city is smoke and silhouette: ferries, gulls working the wake, minarets stacking into each other with distance. Shoot from a ferry rather than a viewpoint — the movement gives you separation no fixed position can.

Lake Büyükçekmece on the city's western edge holds wintering flamingos.
