Marrakesh

A red city with the Atlas behind it and the Sahara beyond that.

Country

Morocco

Coordinates

31.63° N, 7.99° W

Best hour

The last hour, when the walls turn the colour they are named for

Continent

Africa

Pisé walls that hold light like nothing else, and a desert an hour's drive away.

The rammed-earth walls are the reason to be here. They are almost exactly the colour of low sun, so in the last hour the city stops having shadows and starts glowing. Nothing you do to a file in post can imitate it.

Then keep going. Ninety minutes gets you into the High Atlas; four hours gets you to the erg. Marrakesh is best understood as a doorway rather than a destination, which is how we treat it.

The wild neighbour

Fennec Fox

Vulpes zerda

Fennecs hunt the ergs south-east of the city, entirely nocturnally.
