Reykjavík

The northernmost capital, small enough to leave in ten minutes.

Country

Iceland

Coordinates

64.15° N, 21.94° W

Best hour

Any hour in December — there are only four of them

Continent

Europe

A city whose main photographic asset is the sky above it.

Reykjavík is not a large or dramatic city, and pretending otherwise produces weak pictures. What it has is latitude: aurora directly over the harbour, a sun that spends December skimming the horizon, and light that stays golden for hours because it never gets high.

Use the city as foreground and the sky as subject. Then drive twenty minutes and you are alone with the North Atlantic.

The wild neighbour

Arctic Fox

Vulpes lagopus

Iceland's only native land mammal — best seen in the Westfjords.
