The Best Lens Is Sleep
20 June 2026

The least discussed piece of field equipment, and the one that decides the trip.
Every serious wildlife schedule is a sleep-deprivation experiment: up at four, out until dark, edit until midnight, repeat for ten days. By day four your reaction time — the thing the entire trip depends on — is measurably worse than day one, and no lens upgrade buys it back.
The professionals I respect most are ruthless about it. They skip the social dinner, nap at midday when the light is dead anyway, and treat the schedule like altitude acclimatisation: non-negotiable physiology. The macho all-day-every-day itinerary produces tired photographers photographing nothing, slowly.
Budget sleep the way you budget cards and batteries. The animal gives you two seconds. Be awake for them.
