Big Cats

The only cat that solved the problem of being social.

Lions are the exception among cats: a pride is a cooperative unit of related females, held together across generations while males come and go. The hunting is largely done by the females, in coordinated positions, at dusk.

Their range has contracted to a fraction of historical Africa. What remains is fragmented, and fragmentation is the quiet killer — small populations, closed gene flow, and conflict at every fenceline.
