The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms — and the city sits in the middle of it.
Table Mountain National Park runs through Cape Town rather than beside it. Baboons on the peninsula road, penguins on a suburban beach, southern right whales close inshore from July — this is not a city with wildlife nearby, it is a city inside habitat.
The mountain makes its own cloud. When the south-easter pushes it over the plateau it pours down the face like liquid, lit from the west, and holds for maybe twenty minutes. That is the frame.
