A wild animal living, mostly, inside a human landscape.
The central conservation problem is not remoteness but proximity. Asian elephants move through some of the most densely populated countryside on earth, and the work is about corridors, crop compensation, early-warning systems and railway crossings.
The trunk carries roughly forty thousand muscle units and ends in a single finger-like process — precise enough to pick up a single blade of grass, strong enough to move a fallen tree.
